Gary Carpenter
'.... brilliantly conceived
for the saxophone quartet and full of imaginative twists that fully confirm my
already high opinion of this composer's music'.
Gramophone
Gary Carpenter is one of those rare musicians to have composed for almost every 20th Century musical genre with equally consummate skill, and his achievements as composer, arranger, director and orchestrator rank him as one of the most versatile musicians working in Britain today.
He has written four operas, five musicals and a radio drama - The One Alone - with Dame Iris Murdoch, as well as animated and live action film scores, several ballets and a large amount of concert music.
He is on the faculties of the Royal Academy of Music [London] and the Royal Northern College of Music [Manchester] and he regularly guests as professor with the National Youth Orchestra. He has been musical director and/or arranger-orchestrator on many films including The Wicker Man and The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy.
His Van Assendelft's Vermeer for clavichord won the British Clavichord Society Composition Competition (2004) and was nominated for a British Composer Award (2005). Azaleas for harp trio won a Victor Salvi Award in Venice (2004).
The BBC recently commissioned and broadcast his Concerto for Horn and Orchestra.
His Songs of Sadness And Piety are released this year on Christian Forshaw's Sony/BMG CD Renouncement and a retrospective CD of his chamber works on NMC is due for release in 2007.
