Graham Fitkin
' a clever, absolutely fresh sounding, jazzy effusion of ideas, carefully structured and paced so as to keep the listener riveted at every stage'. The Guardian
Graham
Fitkin's 'post-minimalist' label often falls short of describing his true
style which although unashamedly tonal and repetitive, is also concerned with
the shifting of tonal centres and with the mechanisms of manipulating
repetitive processes.
He is also particularly drawn to the possibilities of texture
from multiple keyboards, having worked with Piano Circus and founding and
performing in the 4-piano group Nanquidno. His two most recent major works for
keyboards are CIRCUIT, a Double Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra
recently commissioned by the BBC and KAPLAN, a sixty-minute piece for
two synthesisers and film based on the central character from Hitchcock's
'North by Northwest' which has toured the UK, Japan and Holland.
Fitkin has collaborated with today's foremost performers of new
music including the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, the Smith Quartet and Ensemble
Bash. He has also worked with many of the world's great choreographers and
dance companies and has been commissioned by orchestras such as the Halle, the
BBC Philharmonic and the Bournemouth Symphony.
He continues to compose, perform and conduct with the Graham
Fitkin Group, an ensemble of saxophones, strings and piano.
